Saving old emails if I give up domain registration

Hi - I run a very small business and customers have plummeted because of lockdown.
I don't think I need my own website any more as the booking site I'm using doubles up on what my website does and at the moment I'm paying for both.
However, the website domain/hosting gives me a bespoke email address that I've been using for the past 4 years, and I don't want to lose all the emails from that, which come through my Outlook account.
Does anyone know how I can make sure I don't lose those emails please?

If your email address uses the domain as part of it you can't keep it.

bestbefore · 02/07/2020 16:47

Can you forward them all to your new email address?

suniscomingoutnow · 02/07/2020 17:25

Thanks, yes I can forward them and realise it will no longer be available to send/receive emails once I've given up the domain.

I was hoping there'd be a quicker method than forwarding them individually.

Do you actually need the content of the emails or just the addresses? You could create a database perhaps? Copy it into excel? With some notes perhaps?

Would you want to keep the domain a bit longer so you could keep the email facility but not to actively use it, just to set up an office reply up that says thank you for contacting xxx company. Please note we are now contactable on our Facebook page or by telephone only (etc or whatever, and provide details). Like a change of address with Royal Mail sort of thing in case any enquiries come in to redirect them? Then chuck it in?

suniscomingoutnow · 02/07/2020 18:52

@bestbefore Content and addresses. I'll go through and get rid of the obvious ones to get rid off.
@Elieza Yes, I will have a few months of dual running, but it's how to keep the old ones beyond that that's the issue, and finding a way to do that which won't take days.

My .co.uk domains only cost £10 for 2 years with Easily. You can redirect all e-mail traffic to any other address you choose.

To keep old emails in Outlook, click on the down arrow next to New Email, select More Items and Outlook Data File. Decide where you want to keep the file, give it a name and click OK. The data file will now appear on the left of the screen. You can create folders within it and copy email to it. Any email in the data file is there forever (unless you delete it). It won't disappear when you change your email address.

how much are you currently paying for the domain? you may be being over-charged. you can probably move the domain to a cheaper provider and then the cost of keeping it going will be negligible.

if you do give it up, the "archive" function in outlook is what you need to save a single file containing all the emails currently in your inbox.

Thank you 😊
