Why can't I update Adobe?

Hi. Can anyone help?
If I try to open an Adobe file I get a message of "If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer may not be able to display this type of document".
I've followed their link to upgrade the programme but when I try to run the .exe file I get a message of "application initialisation error".
Any idea what I do now?

Rather than update just download and install the new version

Thanks, folks. I tried downloading. It says that it is going to the Downloads folder but, when I look, it's not there. It will not 'stick' for some reason. DH thinks that it's something to do with Google Chrome but then he doesn't like Chrome so he blames it for everything.
However, he's found some backdoor way of sorting it which is not ideal but it does the job.

I think that there is some sort of protection/firewall thing going on. I've had trouble downloading upgrades before (got round it by re-installing, as mentioned above) and have also had problems uploading data to Govt websites.
