UK Charity website domain name help

I'm looking for some advice from knowledgable people as I'm stuck in the middle of two opposing views.
I manage a small charity and graphic designer is creating a new website for us. They have advised that, rather than transferring our domain from the current ".org" we use, that we should create a new, "org.uk". The volunteer who originally set up our domain says he can see no reason why we should not continue to use the ".org" domain - does anyone have any advise on which is the best to use? We are UK based and will not ever trade or work out with the uk.

I'd appreciate your advice, thanks

I would use both. You can have multiple domains for the same website. If you own them both it avoids someone else using the one you aren't using, potentially causing confusion.

Domain names don't cost much these days. A .org domain name costs around £16 a year and a .org.uk one costs around £12 per year. Many organisations buy as many variations as they can afford just to make sure they don't have problems with people pretending to be them.

@prh47bridge that makes sense, thanks

Totally agree. If you can get the .org.uk use both. You don't want to break any existing links and keeping the .org makes sure that they continue to work. I don't see any major benefit to adding the .org.uk, except, maybe, stopping anyone else from using it inappropriately. Equally, it shouldn't add significant costs.

Did the graphic designer give a reason for breaking everybody's existing links and bookmarks? Just curious.

Use both but forward one to the other.

So either .org forwards to .org.uk if you choose to use that as your primary domain. This will keep your search engine rankings in tact - moz.com/blog/seo-guide-how-to-properly-move-domains

If you choose to keep .org as your primary domain name, just forward .org.uk to it. Don't have two separate sites with the same content.

By primary domain, I mean what is on your business cards, leaflets, etc.

Personally, I'd keep .org and buy .org.uk and just redirect it to .org
