Music copyright on YouTube

If I want to upload a pop song as background music on a video on the YouTube channel of the school I work at, is that allowed?

I've tried reading up on this but it's rather complicated so would someone mind explaining it to me?

When a pal uploaded a video onto YouTube, it recognised the track and immediately attached the link 'Music in this video' and info below it - she says this basically means they're aware she's using the song and are ok with it.

Is that not correct?

Since most of the music available on youtube is copyrighted. So you can't use without prior permission of the author. However, there are few channels which offer free music which can be used in youtube videos like no copyright songs (NCS). some copyright owners simply claim the music and earn from it if an individual uses it on YouTube. Others (depending on the artist / writer) pull the content entirely. There are lots of sites where you can legitimately licence music specifically for youtube content creator use but mp3paw is not legitimate
