I'm being encouraged to join this group on WhatsApp but don't want the contacts to find me on other platforms ie Facebook. Does it automatically pair? Sorry for being dim. I have googled but can't find anything.

Your contacts won't be able to get directly from WhatsApp to your Facebook account. It shows your Facebook profile picture by default but you can disable this in the settings. You can also use the settings to stop people seeing your "about" information.

Install it, register, change the settings then join the group.
