is there a way to 'lock' a presentation so that when you open it, it only shows as a slide show? (rather than being able to view the notes/outline etc)

I don't get that option - only option to save as various html files or different versions of ppt

What version of Powerpoint? It is there in mine (2007) under "Design template" - but TBH if you really really don't want someone to read the notes I would delete them just in case
