Is my dvd player ready for the skip?

I have a Bush vcr/dvd player combi. Vcr part works fine. Dvd bit more often than not skips, stops all together or wont play at all. Tried the cleaning disc's(just cheap ones). Makes no diffrence. Can I fix this or not. TIA

we have a combined one too. i think the vhs bit just causes more problems for the dvd. ours gave up long ago. separate players are probably the best bet.

Thanks southeastastra, I thought as much. I have had my dvd player back from my sis, which is years older than the combined one and it works as if it's new.
