I've had my Kindle for years - can't remember how old it is, but it's probably 8-10 years old. As far as I know it's not full - but how would I know?! In my home page I have 36 pages, and 357 items. I have 81 archived items.

What's started happening recently, though, is that when I buy new books, some get downloaded on to my home page but others get downloaded into my archived items. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason why. As an example, tonight I bought 6 new books, and only three went into my home page - I had to retrieve the others from archived items.

Any idea why this might be? Or is it simply that a) it's full and/or b) it's too old and is dying?

On my Kindle Keyboard: Press Home button so you get the list of books.
Press the menu button and then look to Top Left and it shows how much space is left. Mine is currently saying 1811 MB free.

No idea about why some books would go straight to archive.

Have you looked at the settings on the Amazon website? Is something amiss here?

I still have my old one which is similar age and I've not had this problem although there was a spell when it wasn't downloading my purchases. But scanning for new items seemed to find them.

DH bought me a fire at Xmas and I just don't like it as much as the original Kindle.

Thanks @nannynick (haven't seen your name for ages!). But that doesn't work on my Kindle - all I get is the list of books, it doesn't show me how much space is free.

@Fatted - I hadn't thought of doing that, so I'll give it a go.

I suspect that my Kindle might be dying, as I've had issues with it connecting to 3G as well, and - like you - not downloading stuff until I've prompted it several times.

Connection issues then?
So far my books have synced fine over Wi-fi. Are you using Wi-Fi or 3G when you get your books archived? Do you get any error message in process?

Sorry - only just seen your reply.

I only ever download using Wifi as the 3G connection is so unreliable and slow.
