Echo or Echo Dot?

Could someone please explain the difference between the two please?
Can an echo dot work without the echo and is it the same sort of thing as the echo?
I'm clueless!

OK - both do the same Alexa stuff - same voice, same functions - the speaker is much much better in the big Echo. We started off with a Dot and then bought a bigger Echo for downstairs and sent the Dot upstairs for the kids room so I don't have to listen to Baby Shark on repeat.

It's kind of like thinking about playing your music through your stereo versus playing your music through your clock radio alarm. Dot is about the size of a tin of tuna, Echo is a bit bigger than a can of Monster energy drink.

(The Echo Plus is even bigger and the difference there is it has a hub inbuilt if you're wanting to go down the route of Alexa controlled lights and plugs etc - don't worry about that one)

Thank you for replying! The dot is on offer on amazon was £25 so I wondering about trying it. If i upgrade to the bigger one you can connect the dot to big version, is that right?

It's just speaker size. And yes you can connect the two. Either to play music simaltaeneously through both or to drop in, ie act as an intercom.

If you have stand alone speakers, then you can blue tooth connect, or use an audio jack cable and play it through that.

So it's really if you want a better quality of sound.
