Internet speed help

Our current broadband is terrible. Speed fluctuating so much that my phone often reverts to 4g. Smart tv disconnects from the internet.
I called is back in the summer and they did something to change my channel and things briefly improved but over the past few months we've had more and more problems.
We are supposed to have Super fast fibre.
On a typical evening I have 3 teens all using their devices- smart phones/Smart tv's in this rooms plus me probably using a smart TV and mumsnetting on my phone.
But even in the day (big housing estate) like now when I'm alone and the only person here my phone reverts to 4g and smart TV disconnects or what I'm watching ends up buffering for ages.
Our hub is connected to the only phone socket in the house in the living room. It's on a shelf maybe 2.5 to 3ft above the master plug with nothing else on the shelf. This is in accordance with Plusnets guidelines to get the best out if my internet.

I sit on a sofa next to this shelf. My tv is 10ft away on the same small lounge. My bedroom tv sits directly above the hub in my bedroom above but still has problems.
I've done some online speed tests today and they all come up saying our internet is very slow a mid range example is: 1.06mbps download and 3.17 upload.

Plusnet says to proper test the line I need to plug in a laptop (I don't have one anymore) to a Ethernet cable (also don't have one of those) and that Wi-Fi results aren't applicable but surely if it's only Wi-Fi I use this is applicable to me.
Also our contract is up so before I call I want to know what else I can try. I'm a bit dim on the techy front so please keep it simple.
No cable in our area but I notice my several neighbours seem to have SKY - would changing provider boost speed or is it just the same line with the same issues.
Any advice welcome so I don't just get fobbed off signing up for another 18 months of crap internet.

Have you told the helpline that your upload speed is faster than th download? Usually it’s the other way round and may point to a specific issue with your router.

No i have not called them about this recent slowing. I have the feeling they will disregard my speed test because I've not plugged in a laptop yo do it. I just ran one on my phone.
I am so in tech savvy so thanks for saying that it's something I can mention when I call.

How recent is the drop in speed?? I would suspect it's your modem that is the issue.

How hot is your modem/router? I had a similar experience at the end of the hot summer. Only way i could get a decent connection to internet was to have a fan blowing directly onto the router to keep it cool. I eventually gave up and bought a new modem/router (3rd party, not from internet provider), and have never looked back. We get far better wifi coverage all over the house now. Set up was very simple and no hassles with provider,

Can't you borrow a laptop with an ethernet cable?
