Laptop storage depleting

Dd bought a basic laptop (Lenovo Ideapad 120s) for school work with 32gb memory two months ago and installed Office . After the latest windows update there is now less than 2gb left and it is suggesting she delete a previous version of windows to free up space. Looking at the This PC there are no obviously large files and she has been using onedrive for storage. Any ideas please? Had hoped this would last a few years for uni work.

Pull up This PC in File Explorer
Select C: drive
Right click and select Properties
On the General tab select Disk Clean-up
Select the file categories to delete and action it
On the General tab select Disk Clean-up again
This time Select System Files Clean-up
Select the file categories to delete and action it
Check the space available
If it is still tight
On the General tab select Compress this drive to save space

Repeat this every so often; Windows 64-bit needs 20GB.

If you don't use all of Office you might consider removing the unused apps

32Gb is the bare minimum. You should say yes to removing the previous version of Windows. Why would you keep it? Unless you'll actually revert to an older version it's just hogging storage space.

FiresideTreats · 09/11/2018 16:36

32GB hard drive space is absolutely tiny. Following cdtaylornats advice should help in the short term but honestly that storage capacity is not going to see her through uni, IMO. Most smartphones come with more than that these days...

Thanks, what does it mean by a previous version? It came preinstalled.

Do you know what version it's running now? I assume windows 10, but you can check. The link below will hopefully help...

can she add an sd card at all?

Windows 10 is being constantly updated - there will be no more big releases of Windows.

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 10/11/2018 08:56

Every 6 months it installs a "new version", i.e. a big update with new features, instead of just patches. The old version is kept as a backup, so you can go back to it if the new version breaks something. I normally leave it for week or two just in case, then delete it.

Thank you that makes it clearer.

Have now done a clean up of previous version (10 day automatic one has not happened) and got 8+gb back. Thanks for your help, will know what to do next time.
