What is drive 'x?'

My computer went down recently and was not able to refresh Windows. I could get into the command prompt but it wouldn't let me change drive x to drive c or to run a chkdsk, rstrui.exe etc

I did a diagnostic test showing hard drive to be buggered and it has been sent off to repair but I'm curious. Is it a backup or part of the hdd?

X: is the C: drive when it is in recovery mode.
