Recommend a Tablet to replace Hudl 2 for our dcs?

Our dcs, age 4 and 8 use our old Tesco Hudl 2 tablets mainly for games like Minecraft and watching kids iplayer etc but unfortunately both tablets are on their last legs.

Can anyone recommend a similar tablet that's not too pricey but is really reliable? I'm really not tech savvy but I love the parental controls app that the Hudls have and how easy they are to operate!

We have gone for the kindle fire hd cheapish and easy to manage, you can get Google play on them if you fiddle round now. My dd has had hers for a while and is happy.

I am getting a Kindle Kids for ds, aged 5 in December as a replacement for his hudl if that helps.

The guarantee is the draw for me. He is pretty heavy handed so need something tough.

He mainly watches Kids Youtube and plays the odd game. Might download a few films for holidays and flights but that's about all we will use it for.

I tried a Hudl but found it rubbish compared to my iPad so returned it and bought my 4yr DS an iPad mini. He's 9 now and still uses it as his spare iPad for when his friends come round and I bought him a new normal sized iPad for his last birthday.
I think you get what you pay for and iPads rarely crash or fail.

I am also in the market.

Ooooh thanks for the info! I've paid for loads of games on Google Play so I'm not keen to go down the Apple route because I'll need to pay for them again Blush

Has anyone else managed you install Google Play and YouTube into a Kindle? It looks a bit complicated!

I had both the hudl and the hudl 2 for my kids over the years and to be honest nothing has come close to matching them in replacement in terms of price and performance, except the Fire, but then that locks you to the dreaded amazon app store, which is the crap part. Now most android tablets with half decent processors and ram capacity will do a similar job to the hudl 2, but just won't hit all the marks as well as it did for the price. Our current replacement is a Lenovo tab 3 10.1 and it works fine and does the job.

I replaced mine with a fire kindle 2 Years ago and was able to take advantage of Black Friday deal.

I'm amazed you kept the hudl's going this long!!

I like the fire, easy to use, decent price especially if you get at Black Friday.

Doesn't take long at all to get google play store onto a Fire tablet (I have to do it to get some software DD2 uses to record her schoolwork on it).

Can't really fault them - the charger port on DD2's one failed at the start of this week, just inside warranty, and by Wednesday they had a replacement out to us and we've just got to send the broken one back within the next few weeks when we get a chance (they've' done the returns label and stuff for us - I just need to get to the sorting office when I get a spare moment).

How do you install google play on fire tablet?

ReverseTheFerret · 02/11/2018 12:44

saintlad.com/install-google-play-store-on-kindle-fire/

Only remotely hard bit is knowing if you've got a new or old fire for which files to download. I've followed this guide multiple times with various tablets.

SagelyNodding · 02/11/2018 12:48

That's interesting reverse, the charger ports on both of my DC's fires died after almost exactly 2 years... I'm quite annoyed as once Ds1 installed Google Play on them they were ideal for their ages (6 and 9).

Now I need to decide whether to replace or not! If I do it will definitely NOT be a Kindle Fire, I'm sticking to Android and waiting for Black Friday deals...

ReverseTheFerret · 02/11/2018 12:52

To be honest I think ours died because DD2 is not the most gentle of creatures (she has dyspraxia) and it took a bit more of a battering than expected. The other one bought at the same time is fine, and the ones we had previously (had upgraded after having the old ones a couple of years) are still going strong with my parents.

sugarbum · 02/11/2018 12:55

Watching with interest. I have a HUDL 2 and haven't found anything near as good. We have a kindle fire in the house but I hate it. Can't even remember why.

Graphista · 02/11/2018 13:57

Thanks for the google play info will give it a try later. I've got tv shows and films I bought on Google play that I'd like to watch without paying for again.

Only problem I have now is as its been almost 2 years since I used it I can't remember my account info! Hoping there'll be a password reset thingy or something.

Chocolateporridge · 02/11/2018 20:36

@ReverseTheFerret thanks for the info on installing Google Play! We might buy one Kindle and see how it goes before splashing out on two.

I have to do it as DD2 uses Snaptype Pro to photograph and type onto worksheets for school work (she struggles to write because of dyspraxia) and there's no Amazon store version of it... not going to entrust a small child with coordination problems to anything more breakable than a very cheapie tablet in a very thick case!
