Computer or iPad with keyboard

I'm starting a postgraduate course while working this term and need to think about computing power. I need something separate to the rest of the family as the laptop is in almost constant use with teen DSes homework etc.

If I get an iPad with a keyboard and pen can I basically use it as a laptop? Can I use online word etc with Office 365, does the word app have all the functionality of proper Word (and PowerPoint/Excel)? I will also need to it for working at home where information is sensitive and shouldn't be downloaded onto other devices hence the need for full online access.

Or ami better getting a small light laptop, as I'm more familiar with how it works for work purposes? If so, any suggestions for which ones?

I wouldn’t use an iPad for work, it’s just not really designed for it. I’ve got an iPad with keyboard and I use it for typing work emails etc but the screen would be too small for working on word documents, excel spreadsheets etc.

I suspected that, is just that travelling with I've weeks be so much easier and I like the other aspects of an iPad!
