PAYG mobile top-up issue

I run a small shop and our till system for taking card payments runs off an Alcatel phone using a PAYG SIM from Tesco Mobile (we have limited coverage in our area so limited options) which is topped up automatically on the 1st of each month. The till barely uses any data and the phone doesn't get used for anything else so never runs out. The phone stays on 24/7 and is always plugged in. On the first of every month I get an email confirming the auto top up and then we have to go through the same painful rigmarole of disconnecting and reconnecting the till/phone connection, turning the phone on and off etc otherwise the two won't connect. It is a pain in the backside and seems totally unnecessary. I can't find anything online to suggest that we should have to do this every time the credit is topped up. Can anybody please explain to me whether this is normal or if not, what the problem is? I have never had a PAYG phone before so don't know what the usual procedure is. Googling suggests you just top up and ta-da.
