Inherited an iPhone, but it has a passcode!

We have been given a nearly new iPhone after its owner (a close relative) recently died. On charging it, we have realised that it has a 6 digit passcode so we can’t get into it! Is there anything we can do?

We don’t need any of the content, just need a functioning phone, but don’t know what to do. I presume it had been linked to their computer/iTunes, but we don’t have that.

I suppose it’s not going to be easy, as otherwise people could steal phones with a passcode and just wipe them and use them ?! But surely something can be done?

Do you have a computer of your own?

Take it to an Apple shop with a copy of the death certificate maybe? If it's on an active contract then you'll have to inform them of the death anyway.

Don't you need an iTunes account to register an iPod? Pretty sure you did when dd had an iPod touch 6 years ago.

Don't throw the phone away! You can wipe the phone (factory reset)

You will wipe the previous owner's details and you will need to register and create an Apple account,
