We need to update our computer and DH has suggested I get my own laptop as he uses his for work all the time. We have a wireles connection so we would both be able to surf the net and get rid of our stand alone but I don't know where to start although I quite like the Sony VAIO

i've got the sony vaio fe21h which is just a year old. it's very sexy, the media version as i'm supposed to be making home movies except i never get the time!

i love it!

dh has an older vaio and lusts after mine LOL.

Advent is a made up brand for PC World / Dixons which they use to brand generic laptops sourced from wherever, but typically Korea or Taiwan. They can be competitive, but brand-wise it's a lucky dip.

Thank you all for your comments - all very useful esp bout the Sony which I must admit is my fav because of the way it looks !!! DH has a DELL and is very happy so might go down that road.

Our office all use Dell

our IT man waffles on about them all the time

Flower3554 · 05/06/2007 09:47

Mine is a Dell Inspiron 1300. I love it

I occasionally use my DH's huge computer and it's incredibly slow compared to mine.

Paddlechick666 · 05/06/2007 09:48

just read rest of thread.

dh's vaio is about 4 years old and has travelled all over the place. he's only had a problem after the kids downloaded something dodgy and we had to rebuild it.

my last laptop was an HP and it was very servicable.

not nearly as sexy as my vaio tho .

ps: the only problem i've had with my vaio was courtesy of Norton which really stuffed the registry. Norton is now a dirty word in my house.

get rid of it and download AVG for free instead is my advice to anyone!

Depends what you want it for really. If it's for general/home/internet use any of the suggestions below such as a Dell or Vaio will do you nicely.
If it's for something more complex such as progrmas that need a lot of stability and power such as high-graphics/souncard/CPU useage programs a Mac is the only way to go.

McDreamy · 05/06/2007 15:46

Home use only, photo and video editing, word processing, internet use and playing DVD's for the children when we travel home by air. Simple stuff really.

Any of those first mentioned then. Some people will need a higher grade of processing power/RAM etc. or notebook because of the demanding programs they will use.
Macs are more expensive because they are more stable, have better soundcards and you pay for the name and the stylish design too. No need to get one if you are just using it for general stuff (unless you want to show off with it of course!.........)

McDreamy · 05/06/2007 16:57

there's always that to consider! No just want it for general use. Thanks for your advice.

Dell Inspiron 6400 - love it

HandyTrinkett · 06/06/2007 14:53

Acer travelmate with shiny carbon fibre lid.. ...second Acer I've had and they're both great..

CountessDracula · 06/06/2007 14:54

i have a vaio (mine) and a mini dell (work)

No idea about Vaio model no the Dell is Latitude D420

I like my Vaio but the battery life is shit something to do with the back lit screen I think. On the plus side it does mean you can use it in the garden and still see the screen

hana · 06/06/2007 14:55

we have an ibook
love it

Mhamai · 06/06/2007 14:59

bundle · 06/06/2007 15:01

Kewcumber · 06/06/2007 15:02

sandyballs · 06/06/2007 15:04
