Downloading file with .msi ext and it's changing to .txt

Sorry I don't know where to ask. DS has some learning difficulties and school sent me a link to a typing programme the extension is .msi but when I download it comes out as a .txt file whether I save or open it. I emailed the company and they said school shouldn't have shared the download and I must buy the package, I just can't afford it now. School say the licence they have is for use by any pupil and doesn't state they can't share it. but they don't have time to contact company. Thanks for any help.

An msi file is an installer file. If you double-click it it should install software.

A lot depends on the actual licence it may be limited to school premises.

Thanks the minute I double click it turns to a text file.

You could rename the file to be a .msi and that might fix it?

Or open up the text file (double clicking it should do it), what does the file say? There might be some security software somewhere along the way stopping the file being downloaded or emailed. In that case the file might explain what is going on.

This tool is able to cope with any type of a file www.filetypeadvisor.com/ . It will recognize everything and provide you with detailed description of a file, it will also suggest a converter and an adequate software for opening.
