Virus protection- which is best and does anyone have any promo codes? [grin]

My McAfee protection just expired and I am not sure whether to renew with them or go with someone like Symantec. Does anyone have any experience or advice?
McAfee is annoying cos if you don't pay extra for the Firewall stuff you get irritating reminders that you can't switch off and anyway it is £50 just for the basic package. Help please!

avg is free and wonderful i think. google grisoft avg.

I've also had a techie friend take of my norton and put avg free thingy on my machine!

I've got Kaspersky . It has a free 1 month trial you can download.

i just took norton off my mum's computer, it's now running about 15 times faster.

have nortons but once that expires im going to get AVG again as i think its better and its FREE

What exactly is a firewall? I thought my internet provider gave me one automatically so do I need another?

I've always wondered that too. I guess they think you will be so impressed that you will want the extra bells and whistles and pay for an upgrade. Strange though, I've never met anyone who did, so I always wonder if we're living on borrowed time....
