Broken laptop hinges -are Acers crap or is it the same with all laptops?

Only had our Acer Travelmate for 2 years and the hinges are broken already. Whole thing currently held together with gaffer tape

Is this a common design fault for Acers or is it the same with all laptops?

Can anyone recommend a sturdier one?

a dell latitude d620 nice sturdy feel and shock resistant

shock resistant might be good as I've got a sneaky feeling that a small child might have sat on/stood on/ jumped on ours which may have contributed to its current state
