Can you help? iPhone 6 or iphone 7

Would be grateful for your input. Thinking of replacing my basic Dora with an iPhone, either 6 or 7, I have an iPad Pro and a Mac so want things to work together. I would like the 128 gbytes as I have around thirty gbs already on other equipment and paying for storage. My daughter says the 6 is best as it more robust. However, this is not supported by online reviews. She says my grandson has had trouble with his 7 but he does have history of break downs on his Mac laptops and broken parts. Please, so pleased to hear from you if you can throw light on the choice. I will be using pay as you go as don’t want a contract and want the larger storage which contracts don’t seem to use.

When I was looking I was advised to get a 5 or 7 - I can't remember why not the 6 but it was something 'techy'.

We have a 5 and 3 7s between us and haven't had any problems with them.

HappydaysArehere · 07/05/2018 18:31

Thank you for that AsAProfessionalekko. So it’s a 7 I will be looking at. I’ve been told the 7+ has a good camera but the price would mean I could only go to 32 gbs and I have already used 30gbts on my iPad plus paying extra just for back ups. Also, the size might be a tad too big! It’s a problem. I only have a very basic Dora phone st the moment which is tedious to text and has a useless camera. I will be using pay as you go but this suits my limited no of phone calls. It is the convenience of a good camera and video on tap which really draws me to it. It’s an indulgence in my old age but don’t wish to be daft!

The camera is quite good on the 7. I got the 128 and a really good bundle deal at a high street phone supper whose name isn't 2 or 4 (not sure of I can name names on here).

SadieHH · 07/05/2018 18:45

Go for a 7. There's absolutely no point getting a 6 at this stage.

TheWorldAsh · 07/05/2018 18:48

6s is pretty much end of life now. I'd go for the iPhone 8.

Or the 7 if the 8 is too pricy. Avoid the 6s though.

Layla75 · 07/05/2018 18:48

I have the 7 plus. I love the size and couldn’t go back to a smaller one but it’s slightly too big to fit in my jeans pocket comfortably if that makes a difference.

Only downside is that there is no separate earphone aperture- it’s the same one used for charging. This annoys me as I like to listen to my audiobook to go to sleep but can’t charge at the same time (first world problems I know!)

mither · 07/05/2018 18:49

More robust would be the SE which is basically a 6 in a 5 casing. There is no difference physically between 6 & 7.

I would always go for the latest model that you can afford though. They will almost certainly last longer.

AutumnGlitterBall · 07/05/2018 18:58

Tesco online is selling the iPhone 7 128gb for £649 if that’s any help to you. I bought my 7 from them as I have a great sim only plan and usually keep my phone for about four years.

ggirl · 07/05/2018 19:03

I've just gone from 6s to 7 , looks exactly the same, apparently the 'processor is faster ' .
Means nothing to me.

HappydaysArehere · 08/05/2018 07:21

Thank you for taking the time to answer. These replies are really useful and I can see that I will definitely leave the 6 alone. Layla I am too old for jeans (violins play) but would be carrying it in my bag so would I notice the weight? I would need a fold over type of cover for it I suppose to protect it as well as possible. Also, is the incoming sound on the telephone good? I ask this as my friend showed me her SE and then rang the number. I could hardly hear it although I turned the sound to maximum. I have no trouble hearing my basic Dora so was surprised. My daughter let me hear her 6 and that was really good. Sorry about all the questions.

I guess it depends how important it is to you to have the latest model and what you want to use it for. Dh has a 7plus and I have a 6 and the times when I’ve borrowed it to do things I can’t see any difference in it whatsoever apart from the size...! I wouldn’t pay the extra. But that’s just me. I’m happy to use my 6 until it becomes unusable.

SciFiFan2015 · 08/05/2018 08:04

I have a 6plus which I will keep for as long as I possibly can. It's starting to get slower now. I second the PP who said for for the most up to date phone you can afford. It's a way of future proofing yourself.
You could consider buying a second hand phone. All but one of mine have been second hand (for money reasons and environmental reasons). Find one that has been reconditioned. Or even one that had been bought, barely used and then returned.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 08/05/2018 08:05

Sound (outgoing and incoming) is fine on the 7. Yes definitely get something like an Otterbox. I'm amazed how many people I see with a phone costing £xxx without a case!

RingtheBells · 08/05/2018 08:42

I have a 6s and am really happy with it, I have had it 2 years and will get the battery replaced this year as apple are doing them for £25 and hopefully it will last another 2, I have always had pay and go with Tesco and have been happy with them. You will definitely need a case as iPhones are quite slippy to hold and If you get one that covers the face also they are best in your bag. I would get a 7 though or the latest you can afford as they will last longer as models drop off each year with Apple updates and the 6 must be at least 3 years old now

Of course you are not too old for jeans, I’m 60 and can’t imagine ever not wearing jeans, I never put my phone in my pocket though Smile

RingtheBells · 08/05/2018 08:51

Also look on John Lewis as you get a 2 year guarantee there and they sell all the models.

HappydaysArehere · 08/05/2018 19:14

*Ringthebells”. I am 75 and you are just a babe in arms.

7 - the battery on the 6 is awful. The camera is also awful, you can tell that it’s outdated. I have a 6s and I can’t wait to get rid of it as it’s definitely slowing down, I have had it for about 2.5 years.

HappydaysArehere · 11/05/2018 07:45

Thank you all so much. I am now deliberating between
the plus and the normal 7. I love the bigger screen and the second camera but I am thinking how heavy it might be in my handbag and how much room it would take up. It’s the thought of it being with me all the time. I sway this way and then the other. Then I have been looking up the folio type covers and there is a muffled sound problem when using them. This is common on all the covers that I have seen. Torro reckon this is caused by a vacuum being caused by folding the front cover back but not holding it close enough to seal the vacuum. Apparently it should be used so as to hold them firmly together, especially in the microphone area. I really will need to protect the screen but wonder why Apple only sell the back protectors. So now I keep looking at the phones in the Apple store but the trouble is that the plus makes the normal one look smaller than it probably is. Then I think will I manage the bigger one? I keep reading all your posts, you have been so helpful.

The case covers are fine - a partially deaf relative uses one fine.

somewhereovertherain · 11/05/2018 07:53

We have a mixture of 6s 6+ and 8s. Not much difference between 8 and 6s battery life and waterproof positives. Lacking headphone socket is a pain in the ass

Regarding space you’d shouldn’t need to put everything from the iPad onto the iPhone. I’m a very active user with lots on my phone and have a 64gb one which is ample. My DD did struggle with 16 but seems fine now on a 64gb one.

Go for the newest one you can afford. Couldn’t see any benefit in the X.

And get a decent case.

LightAsTheBreeze · 11/05/2018 08:53

As you have an iPad and a Mac, the 64gb smaller 7 would probably be ample as your photos would be in iCloud and can be kept in the optimised form on your phone also you can text on your iPad and Mac, in the house once your phone is up and running if you want, it depends really how much you use your phone when you are out.

moralminority · 11/05/2018 12:13

Whichever one you decide (I have a 6 which I'm happy with) you can get screen covers which I highly recommend. They've saved my phone when it's been dropped a few times (it has a case as well) and the screen covers have cracked but the phone screen didn't. The are only a few pounds and are very easy to fit. We've got them on our iPads too. My son dropped his on an office chair leg and the screen cover broke into dozens of pieces and the screen was fine. I agree with pp - get the most up to date one you can afford.

SciFiFan2015 · 11/05/2018 19:46

I have plus. I love it so much. I use a case called a loopy case which really helps. I never put it in a bag or pocket. It just hands from my finger. I use the headphones to make calls as I've never liked holding a phone to my head anyway. Wish you could use headphones with a landline phone!
If you get the plus, you'll probably never go smaller again it's braw.

HappydaysArehere · 13/05/2018 19:25

Thank you everyone. I took the plunge and went into Apple on Friday and after a little deliberation and the salesman suggesting I put his iphone 7+ into my bag for sizing, I bought one. It is lovely and I am now awaiting a folio type case from Amazon. I went for a Torro which is described as fitting an 8 + or 7+. Until then it is sitting in our bedroom where no one dare touch it! Just hope it will fit and there are no issues with sound as I am bowled over with its clarity. LightAsTheBreeze when the phone was set up all my photos, about 2500 appeared in a “squashed up” form is that what you mean by optomised? If so, does that mean they are not taking up too much space? AsAProfessional that is encouraging. Perhaps it is how it is held. Thank you everyone for all your help.

LightAsTheBreeze · 13/05/2018 19:46

On your phone settings which are pretty much the same as your iPad go to settings, photos and make sure optimise iPhone storage is ticked. I’m guessing you are using iCloud and paying 79p a month for 50gb storage to keep them there anyway

It looks like if optimised is ticked they take up about 25% of the space of unoptimised ones. Mine appear squashed whether it is ticked or not
