Serious problems with Safari on my Mac- can anyone help?

I'm having problems with my Mac. Safari keeps freezing and I can't cope, meaning that I have to force quit and keeping losing stuff.

Can anyone suggest why it may be and what I can do to sort it?
TIA

i think you can run mozilla on a mac you could try that, if not i can email my friend who covinced me to go mac,

funnypeculiar · 11/05/2007 21:44

YOu can run mozilla/firefox - I do

PigeonPie · 11/05/2007 21:47

Is it on specific sites or generally. I've found that Safari is ok most of the time, but I have to use Firefox for Sainsbury's, Yell and some others. If it's generally, I can ask my DH if he's got any ideas (he's an IT geek!)

bananabump · 11/05/2007 21:55

My dp who's a big ol' geek says you could try resetting it. He says click on the safari menu and click reset safari. You shouldn't lose bookmarks/favourites by resetting it but you may lose any saved passwords so make sure you know them.

Hope this helps but if it doesn't work, let us know and I'll ask him again, he's a mine of maccy information!

That's odd Pruni - I can (and am!)

Dp uses Safari all the time, but I also had to switch to Firefox as I couldn't MN

OliviaMumsnet · 11/05/2007 22:29

[grin}Thanks for the suggestions.
It is a general problem rather than with specific sites. I will try the reset (racks brain to think whether there are any passwords she doesn't know)
and see how I get on.

is it to full on memory?
i find when i have azillion photos on mine it freezes so i do a photocull and itis much better?

OliviaMumsnet · 11/05/2007 22:32

Do you mean photos in the rest of my Mac NAO? I do have a lot of pix. Could it be that affecting my Internet browsing?

I think mine definitely speeded up after a certain ub ish mumnetter advissed me to do a photo cull
mine stared freezing all the time and geneally being a pita for no apparent reason
I generally have around 2000 pictures on my mac but its only a bog standard mac book and although new- i dot think the memory is that hot
when i deleted a wadge of pictures it performed better and infact now i think of it has not 'frozen' in a while...
Hope that helps.... however macbook pro may have better memory but hubs advice worked for me!

Agree cull, my Mac laptop kept freezing and not allowing me to save. Had a look and dh had a zillion pics AND another zillion songs on there. Much better since I threw him off my ibook!

bananabump · 11/05/2007 23:17

Does it seem ok now, Olivia?

OliviaMumsnet · 12/05/2007 00:10

Oh god, do songs make a difference too?!

I'm an iTunes junkie - I've got over 4000 songs in my library and 2000 photos (some of them very hi-res)
Haven't had a freeze since the reset, so keeping fingers crossed. Thanks again all.

Also try emptying your Cache (under the menu title Safari). In my experience there are certain websites (usually belong to staid and boring companies like the bank) that don't work well on Safari. I just use Mozilla Firefox for those sites and Safari for everything else. Have you updated to the latest version of Safari? Also, are you sure that it isn't your internet connection that is iffy and/or slow. That would cause freezes as well. Try checking the speed of your internet connection through your modem or router.
