Does anyone know how to go about building a website without using a template?

Hi, I am in the process of starting up my own business and as yet I don't have any money to spend on a website. I have a domain name with 1and1 and have had a look at their templates. It's all quite simple to do, but I just don't like how they look, there is a template look. I'd like to design my own pages and create a site, but have no idea whatsoever on how to do this - can anyone help?

Do you have access to Microsoft Frontpage? This is a relatively easy program to use and you should be able to create a website that you're happy with quite easily.

You can also create websites using Word, but I think they look a bit naff.

If you don't have access to Frontpage do a google search for WYSIWYG website programs (What You See Is What You Get) I'm sure you'll be able to download one which will work for you.

Personally I go right back to basics and write bare bones HTML and CSS, but I'm a geek

I've you're still struggling tonight give me a shout and I'll see what I can find. I'm sure there are other sites that offer templates which might be useful for you, but I'm on a break from building wardrobes at the moment and haven't time to go hunting.

I should say though HTML isn't really that complicated depending on how computer literate you are, and how much effort you want to put into it.
CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a bit more complex, but not much, and that's the part that makes everything look prettier.

If you get a decent book from the library you could probably learn enough in 2-3 days to build your own website in HTML and I find it makes editing things much easier.

Scanner I might be able to help you-what sort of thing are you looking to do? Some basic static pages (with pics and email links for example?) or something more advanced?
