Can kids use messenger?

My 8 yr old has a kindle fire. She is adamant that one of her friends has messenger on her tablet, and consequently she now wants messenger in order to chat... I basically know nothing about messenger. I know my dd can't have facebook. She also doesn't have a phone number. So is there any way she can have messenger on her tablet?? Thanks!

I'm almost certain you have to have Facebook for messenger as it uses your Facebook details.

I've been looking at messaging apps for my DS who is 8. I dont want him to have fb account or a sim card yet. Have just downloaded monster messenger as it gives the parents controls on who they can chat with and I can see the conversations too. Will see how it goes.
