Why are my AOL parental controls so crap?

I want to let my kids online but having put on AOLs parental controls for the approprriate age they're unable to google any images at all. Even flowers or chicks!

I've even tried putting her on the young teen setting but still it's ridiculously limiting and won't let her on a whole host of harmless things.

Can anyone suggest a better way I could be doing this. I want my two older kids (8 and 7) to have freedom to look things up and see pictures.

What no-one? Don't your kids use the computer?

Could you turn that off, go through google and turn the google advanced search onto something suitable?

Spidermama · 23/04/2007 20:24

Phew thanks for responding Charles.

Sorry, you'll have to bear with me as I'm a luddite.

Do you mean that I should reset my dd's account to access all areas, then log on as her, go to google and try to find this advanced search thing, change it and it'll stay that way when I return her to the parental control status?

OMG. No...just go to google.co.uk
then images
then advanced options, scroll down the page and you will find a modererate or something along those lines option....safe...or something tick it, update/ok it and away your go

charliecat · 23/04/2007 20:40

Its use strict filtering, just had a look. The advanced thing is just next to where you would type the word in

charliecat · 23/04/2007 20:41

here

AOL is crap. At some point (when your Luddite tendencies have diminished , I should consider changing to a more user-friendly and less invasive service provider.

Spidermama · 24/04/2007 13:08

Thanks CC. I'll try that.

Rabble so I gather. I feel I'm sort of committed to AOL for the time being partly due to ludditacity and partly because I've been told that once in, you can't get AOL out of your computer. So I think I'll wait 'til I get a new computer then ditch AOL.
