I recently did some online training through work and at the end, anyone who wanted to could leave their email address so they could contact others for help/support/advice. I now have a long list of email addresses, but starting an email conversation with forty other people doesn't seem to be the best way of keeping in touch.

My initial thought was to organise a facebook group, so those that want to be involved can be, and those that don't won't get inundated with 'junk' emails. Is there a better way of staying in touch with a group of people you don't know?!?

I'd say email is probably the right way.
Lots of business computers will block access to FB, and you may struggle to find a single messaging tool everyone uses. That depends on the business, but Email is universal.

Why not do a single email asking "how do you want to stay in touch?"

You could propose all emails to the group contain a keyword, so people can filter those emails out if they want to.

Did the people sharing their email addresses want to share them with the whole group? Careful with that.

That's a really good point about blocking - i am a teacher, and i imagine facebook is blocked at school...
