Changing gender on Minecraft

Please could someone help because we are losing the plot here.

DS has MInecraft 1.12.1

He seems to have defaulted to 'girl' and would like to be a boy.

We have gone on to Profile and clicked about but nothing happens. I did read somewhere on the Mojang website that the gender was selected randomly and could not be changed. Surely that can't be right?

Ds says you can change your 'skin' and that can make you character look male or female. Don't ask me how to do it though!

2nd step : prntscr.com/5pqj7u --- Click upload to minecraft.

3rd step : prntscr.com/5pqk11 --- Click on this is a normal skin.

4th step : prntscr.com/5pqka0 --- Click on change.

I am told that's how to do it

I think we must have a different version, because when following these steps we get this page. Thank you though!
