So my hp laptop is attempting to configure some updates as it boots up and gets to 73% and freezes, so I cannot even get to the log in page and cannot get into windows. Can anybody help? I have restarted my laptop at least 15 times now - I have tried taking the battery out and putting it back and restarting - I have removed all external devices (mouse, adaptor) - nothing is working. I need this laptop for work (freelance) and I cannot afford to get an IT bod in to look at it, I also don't have 2 weeks to leave it with pc world to fix it. I am now getting so worried that I am on the verge of tears. I have tried the forums on Microsoft and nobody has replied. I am tearing my fucking hair out.

Every time windows 10 does updates it fucks up my computer somehow - I can't be the only one ???

Please help, I am desperate to get my laptop working.

See if you can open it in safe mode ( press the shift key, hold it down and press the power button) and then you will see some options, if you can, look at this site.

Thanks so much for your advice. I'm in the midst of trying some advice I found on the HP website; a system restore to take it back to a point before the updates.... It has been 'restoring files' for about half an hour now and I'm starting to worry it isn't going to work either or has got stuck. It's so miserable trying to sort this out, just want to go to bed :-(

The system restore didn't work - apparently it isn't enabled on Windows 10, you have to go into settings and enable it which I cannot do as I can't log on.

I tried your advice re. the shift key but nothing happened I'm afraid. I had read the link you mentioned already but as I'm unable to get the laptop into safe mode I can't make use of the advice on there :-(

Maybe try option 6 here

To get it to boot in safe mode?

Had problems on daughter's laptop after an update a few months ago and had to boot from a USB and reinstall windows 10 I think... files were retained ok, somehow...

How I hate windows 10...
