Does anyone know how I can get my broadband to be faster? Any tips or hints on settings or where the best place to put the router would be.

I am with sky and my broadband is getting really slow ......

I work in IT... What speed are you currently getting? If you can, plug a laptop or computer into one of the ethernet ports on the router and run a few speedtests, at different times of the day.

Then do the same over the wireless. If the results are the same, then you need to get a faster broadband package.

What are the advertised speeds on the package you're currently paying for?

8? That's advertised.
Would that be right?
Download speed 5-6
Upload 2
Ping 25

Does that sound about right?

Also seems on my iPhone 7 plus there is constant circle up in the left hand corner going round and round - is that loading?

That's pretty slow... You could probably do with a faster package, depending on what you're trying to use it for. 6Mb/s should be OK for checking mumsnet and browsing, but if you're trying to stream Netflix or watch content online then it needs to be considerably faster.

I can watch my smart TV perfectly
Netflix is perfect
Spotify

I never have any problem with any of them

Is that normal?

Depends what quality you're streaming in, for HD you need a minimum of 5Mb/s with Netflix, which is about the maximum of what you're getting at the moment... It might drop in and out of HD quality if you use the internet while streaming? 4K needs to be a lot faster, but I'm guessing you don't need that lol. If you find streaming etc is ok, what is it that seems to be slow?

Loading of a couple of websites

Also sometimes pictures on twitter take a few seconds to load but it doesn't seem to struggle on Facebook

The speed I gave you was taken from my mobile which is connected wirelessly

Would wired give a better idea?

Also do you know what the small circle is in the left top corner of my phone?

Which Sky package are you on?

I had to upgrade to Fibre as I have 3 teens so as many as 8 devices online at one time.

Kelsar · 31/07/2017 23:07

Sky broadband unlimited
Says upto 17mb ????

Don't forget there are two ends to a connection, if you are communicating with a low speed server or a server serving millions of users then it doesn't matter how fast you are.

I have to have a wifi extender in my home as there's spots where Internet is non-existent/slow.
