Whatsapp- can I hide someone's profile photo?

I have a contact that needs to remain a contact for now but he's recently changed his profile photo on Whatsapp. The photo irks me every time I see it. I've turned off the last seen status to reduce my stress levels but if I could turn off his photo I'd feel even better!

I thought if I hid my photo then I might not be able to see any photos but that didn't work!

Can you not just contact him in a different way, e.g. text?

Archive the chat. He disappears off the main what's app chat page. But is still there if you need it (swipe down from top and "archived chat" will appear)

If he sends you a message he automatically reappears in main page

Depends on his settings. You can choose for your photo to remain hidden unless the other person has you saved as a contact. If you unsave him as a contact (and he's chosen this setting) his photo will disappear. The conversation will remain in your list of chats, but his number will appear at the top instead of his name .

I know I'm not saved as a contact in his phone- he doesn't save anyone- just memorises their numbers! So that could work though I have no head for numbers so might get confused with messages.

Archiving sounds the way forward right now- you don't lose any of the messages this way?

No, if you archive, all the messages are still there, just hidden off the main screen. So you can get them back but it takes a little bit more effort.
Saves you seeing his face every time you go on what's app!
