Double tapping iPad doesn't bring apps up

Has anyone else got this problem. Have had my new ipad about two months. Everything working well but suddenly the double tapping procedure to bring up apps so they can be swiped up no longer works. The strange thing is that my old iPad which my husband is using is the same. He was using the iBooks app when it froze so I double tapped to bring the app page up so that it could be swiped up which in the past has always worked. When nothing happened I tried mine and it was the same. We both have iOS 10.3.1 as we have updated them. I then tried closing them both down holding home and closing down button. Again I still couldn't get the home button to produce the apps. Has anyone got any other ideas? I would be so grateful for any help.

Hello folks. I have discovered the answer in case anyone else has this problem! Found it with difficulty on the Apple community queries. I went into settings, then accessibility, then scrolled down to home button. It was set on default. I changed it to slow and then all was well; did this on both our iPads. Hooray! Don't have to trek to the Apple Store. If you have iOS 10.3 recently downloaded it might be worth trying it to see if your double tapping needs adjusting to turn off apps.

If you have Multitasking gestures turned on (in Settings-General) you can get the apps up ready to swipe off by dragging up on the screen with 4 or 5 fingers. Works just the same as using the home button.

RustyBear, that is a revelation. I had been using a pinching movement which only closed the individual down. I hadn't been swiping up with four or five fingers. That is great. I am thinking that giving the home button a rest is a good idea long term. Thank you so much.
