Updating IPhone

I haven't updated my iPhone and keep getting messages to update it.
What are the upsides and downsides of the update and how long does it take please?

It takes about 5 minutes to update my iPhone and iPad. I've owned iPhones for years and have personally never had any issues. But some updates have had problems for a minority of users - Google the latest update to find out if there are any known issues. As a rule of thumb, I always leave it a couple of weeks after first getting the prompt to update. This is normally long enough for Apple to identify and fix any issues with the update.
