I used to have Windows Movie Maker on my laptop but lost it when it had to go in for repair. I've tried to download it again but I'm not having much luck. The laptop has Windows 8.1 on it. Can you recommend a movie maker to help me edit clips from films to put on Youtube?

Have you tried this link?
support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/18614/windows-essentials

Thanks. Yes, I've tried that, downloaded it again but it says movie maker can' start, make sure you have minimum system requirements.

OK, I would try this then

That was helpful, thanks.
It still seems to be playing up though, working intermittently, so I've downloaded a new movie maker, Win Movie Maker, now the problem is, the film I want to show clips from and make my Youtube video from is on a DVD disc, this DVD was made from a VHS video tape, I want to RIP (is that the right word) the film from the disc in the laptops disc drive onto the Win Movie Maker, so I can edit it. I just can't seem to get the thing ripped.

Yes, ripping is the right word. Google for something like "free dvd rippers for windows 8.1" - there are lots to choose from.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 09/12/2016 18:47

Well, I'm in mid rip :) with WinX DVD Ripper Platinum, I take it the rip has to happen in real time, I've minimise the window and letting it get on with it. I will let you know how I get on.

The real time was wrong, it was just playing the film. Managed to do it again, the ripping took about 20 mins, the film is fully ripped to the laptop and I can watch the film but for some reason when I transfer it to the movie maker, all that's transfered to edit is the sound.
I'm now trying again. There's a lot of options re ripping mode, it's confusing.
I'm not giving up!

This is like pulling teeth! I've now got sound and picture but it's just recording the first chapter of the film and not the others. There's no where to choose how many or which chapters I want to record. I'll give it another go tomorrow, had enough for now.

Have you bought a full version of WinX DVD Ripper Platinum, or downloaded the free trial version? If the latter, I believe that only the first five minutes of the DVD are ripped. WinXDVD Ripper is a free fully functioning program, but the Platinum edition definitely isn't free. There's a comparison between them at www.winxdvd.com/dvd-ripper/
Alternatively, www.thebalance.com/free-dvd-ripper-programs-1356639 gives plenty of options.

Ah, ok, that explains it. I will download the other one. we'll get there in the end!

Thanks for the links but it doesn't look like the basic winxdvd is available now, only the platinum seems to be downloading. I tried the other ones too but no luck either.

Someone on another forum had a link to the basic version, which I've downloaded, it's ripping now, taking ages, hopefully that's a good sign!

33% ripped has taken about 20 mins.

Success! The ripping is done. Now, it seems the movie maker is the trial version, so saving to the computer or sending to Youtube isn't possible. Will have to look into a full version, whether this means payment or not.
