Gah! Help me get rid of Windows 10 message before I explode!

Someone must know how to do this - surely?! I have a "your windows 10 upgrade is ready to install" window which I can't close. The only options are "start upgrade now" or "schedule it for later" - and if I choose to schedule for later, it offers me three possible dates of which I must pick one, and it warns me this can't be changed later. I DO NOT WANT WINDOWS 10. Not now, not ever. Oh please, some wise computer person of Mumsnet, help me get rid of this infernal screen with no "close" option.

I downloaded Wi 10 yesterday, and I'm still feeling my way round it. There is a program called GWX Control Panel which you can download, this stops further notifications (I believe). Sorry can't link as I haven't found out how to C&P yet!

Thanks for the replies! It isn't the notification icon I've got, though - it's a big pop up window across my screen. It can't be minimised, even, let alone closed. I am considering throwing my laptop out the window.

I got that. I told it to do it later. So I went for coffee and came back to find the git sneakily installing Win10...
After scaring me with some pulsating blue screens reassuring me cheerily"Your files are all exactly where you left them!", it's actually been an improvement, though all autosaved passwords had to be re-entered.

There is no escape...

No....... Please say that's not true. Sad Sad Sad I do not want this bloody upgrade and I don't understand how Microsoft gets away with forcing it on us.

Don't forget, you can always roll back to W7 (or 8) within one month of it installing.

Clicking the cross in the top-right hand corner of the pop-up box now agrees to a scheduled upgrade rather than rejecting it. This has caused confusion as clicking the cross typically closes a pop-up notification. The upgrade could still be cancelled when the scheduled time for it to begin appeared, Microsoft said.

Agh, I think that's exactly what happened to me! I clicked the cross to close the window and it started the upgrade. So then I tried to cancel it, but now the only options I have are upgrade "now" or " choose one of next three days". There is no option to say sod off, I don't want it!

I didn't know I could roll back if the worst comes to the worst - that's helpful. But really, I don't want this upgrade, as I simply don't have time to spend however many days finding my way round a new operating system right now. I have a series of deadlines and need to be able to use my computer. Grrrrr. I think this is really underhand of Microsoft.

Have you looked into GWX Control Panel, as suggested by NanTheWiser? Have a read here - GWX - sounds like it will do exactly what you need it to.

Are you getting the same screens as in that MS link?

It looks as though you should be able to cancel the upgrade right up to the last minute, if you persevere through all the steps (despite its constant cheerleading and attempts to persuade you otherwise).

If you are on Windows 7 you won't need to spend days finding your way round it. There are differences but nothing that will cause the average user any difficulty.

Ds has managed to stop his laptop upgrading w7 to w10.

When the message appeared giving him a proposed upgrade date, he clicked to delay it but it only gave a few days' grace so he clicked to cancel it and it warned there was a limited offer to upgrade which he accepted.

ds has finally installed it now exams are over and isn't finding it too bad so far. Is avoiding using MS Edge in favour of IE.

We upgarded, 1 PC 3 x laptops. Went through and swicthed on/off all the privacy/linky bits and have never had a problem with it at all.

Laptops are NOT connected via outlook, don't laod to cloud and all that. We switched it all of and log on 'locally' - you know, normally Smile

The PC I DO have linked, I use it for work, so that is easier... DH plays games, so he is linked to whatever the hell that is.

It is easie to navigate than the hell that was 8.horrendous and, once you have everything switched off, it seems to be fine.

So it doesn't have to be hellacious!

I hate windows 10 - it makes em cry. got so bad we now run windows 8 on the two PCs and my netbook is android so no issue there.

Windows 10 is terrible - it's like a really bad leap back to 1996
