new iphone not restoring/synching

I'm sure this has done before but I'd really appreciate some help

new iphone6s.

when I've got new phones in the past I've synched my old phone to itunes, then plugged new phone into Mac and all my stuff is then transferred to new phone.

Only it's not happening. I seem to have got my contacts from the cloud, but nothing else is synching - no aps, photos etc.

When I plug the new phone in I get this message: "The iPhone “XXXs iPhone” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes."

Itunes is up to date on the mac, and I don't have itunes on the phone (do I?).

any ideas oh techy ones?

actually itunes doesn't show a phone when I plug the new phone in.

I think iPhones come with iTunes already loaded. You probably need to go into the App Store and update it to enable you to sync your iPhone?
