Anyone upgraded from windows 7 to 10?

Im in a dilemma. all of the techy sites have all sorts of arguments for and against so I want some real life feedback.

We have a laptop about 3 years old that we only need to run emails and social media things(facebook,skype ) ,plus MN of course . No games but some Netflix occasionally. Its not a high powered machine at all but we went for (relative) cheapness when we bought it.

Shall I upgrade or not?

I have. Early days but I prefer windows 10, more user friendly. No problems with the change over.

I did, then reversed it about a week later. The main reason was that it seemed to be set up for Networked PCs and changed all the access settings (don't know the correct term) for every single file. This then meant that games wouldn't save because they couldn't write to the saved games folder etc etc. Annoyingly it has kept these settings even when I reversed the upgrade. It was only a minor problem but it just didn't feel like it was set up for an individual user.
Plus the desktop "active tiles" didn't seem to work right.
About a week after I reversed back there was an update which seemed to stop Windows security essentials from working properly.
I also don't like that you don't really "own" the right to use the new operating system. There would be nothing stopping them from charging for it in the future.
The whole thing has made me think about changing to a MacBook.

Yes, and I love it.

However, I have a new laptop (bought end May) and my DD whose laptop was older, about the age of yours, had problems and went back to earlier Windows version.

There is however nothing I don't like about 10.

Hmmm, mixed reviews then. I was hoping for a more cut and dried overview.

I wonder if the reason is the relative ages of machines trying it out then?

I did read that when installing you had to be very careful about what what updates you allow to be installed. Maybe that also has an effect on how it works?

DH reckons it's better than Windows 7, he always upgrades to the latest things but he's very happy with it and wants to change all of our computers over and is recommending all the family do it.

I would, I've upgraded all of my computers that would take it. You have a month to roll it back.

mine seems to be faster and not had a problem upgrading
never had a crash since upgrading either

Yes, Iwantto definitely it depends on the age of the computer. No way would I put it on an older machine, mine was new and it works an absolute dream with all the updates.

However, the process to update to 10 was not simple, long story.

Done my laptop similar age to yours. No problems but it does want you to use their browser and removed my antivirus. No other problems.

Non plused about its use have mine still set up like xp anyway. Haven't done my work PCs yet as all on Windows 8.1.

I have two desktop PCs and a laptop. All three were upgraded a while ago. One of the PCs hit a problem with the Start button not working after a week or so and had to be downgraded again. I upgraded that PC again after there was a big update that fixed most of the problems. Since then the only issues I've had are the start menu stopping working a couple of times (a restart fixes that problem so it isn't anything like as much of an issue as it was when I first upgraded) and my old version of Microsoft Access deciding it needs to reinstall occasionally (not a problem - I don't need to find the install CD or anything like that to complete the process, it just takes longer to start).

Overall I'm very happy with it. It boots much quicker and seems faster overall. I quite like Edge (the new browser) but Internet Explorer is still there for those who want to use it. If I were you I'd give it a whirl. You can return to Windows 7 for a month after upgrading so it is easy to go back if you don't like it or have problems.

Things to note:

The games that were built in to previous versions of Windows are not included by default. They are available from the Store. They are free but you have to put up with occasional adverts.

If you want to use any of the desktop wallpapers that were built in to Windows 7 you will need to save them somewhere or they will disappear during the upgrade.

The capability to play video DVDs is no longer built in to Windows. There are free apps in the Store that will do this if you want to watch a DVD on your PC.
