Split water on my MacBook HELP!

I just spilt water (about an inch or so in a glass) onto my open MacBook. It turned itself off immediately and I grabbed a load of kitchen roll, turned it upside down and mopped up all the water I could see. I tried to turn it on but it didn't work.
Have since googled for advice and read that I should leave it off for 72 hours so I will do that.
Does anyone have any tips for saving MacBooks for water damage? Or has this happened and your laptop survived?! Really can't afford a new one and I'm pretty sure my insurance doesn't cover water damage so I really hope it isn't dead.

You should have left it off.

you may well have killed it by trying to turn it on, but leave it somewhere warm (not hot) for a few days to dry out then try again.

DO NOT be tempted to try it sooner.

Electronics can happily be washed in clean water as long as they aren't turned on until they are completely dry. Trying to turn them on while still wet can cause short circuits and wreck them.

I know, but I was in denial that it was damaged. Most of the water went around the laptop, I was hoping that only a bit had got on it, and it was fine. A few minutes after it happened it started whirring on its own, and then it stopped again. That's bad, isn't it? Definitely not going to touch it for a few days.

Put it in a bag with some rice - that will help dry it out.
