I just need more space! Phone related

I have a MOTO E less than a year old with very few apps on it and I keep getting a message that it is running out of storage space.

I have trawled through the storage folder and cant see anything else I can delete to make more space. The few apps I have are all necessary for day to day use and to get rid of them would negate the reason for having a smart phone anyway.

The phone itself comes with an internal 2.17gb - only 177mb still available
I have a 32 gb external card that I have moved everything I can to.

I have tried and failed to understand how to free up more space as everything saved seems to be necessary for the phone to work.

I have a file editor that is apparently very good but only serves to confuse me further .The web sites I have looked at always go off into too much technical stuff which I dont want to get into. I am normally able to understand how to sort out technical stuff and can navigate problem solvers easily - but not this time.I just want more space. :)

Any ideas?

Thanks Tattersail that is helpful and Ill give it a go.

But I cant get new phone yet as this is on contract so I am trying to make the best of it I naively thought that an external card would help but it doesn't seem to.

Its annoying as I love the phone

I hesitated to respond earlier because, frankly, I have nothing useful to say. But I'm not sure your storage space was ever going to be enough. I've battled my photos alone down from 10 to 8.5gb. And I'm currently feeling vicariously outraged on behalf of iPhone 6s purchasers who were suckered into a mere 16gb.

I don't know how it works - but I hope there's enough to go round because our individual data needs are going to be massive ...

Check your SMS and email it may be storing long threads that take up space.
