i read this as born by emacs every single time

Last year I celebrated, if that's the right word, thirty years of daily emacs use. One of the joys of using a Mac is that most of the text boxes, such as the one I'm typing this into, support a subset of emacs keystrokes.

Mind you, after RMS spent a week in my house, I had a strange urge to learn vi in great detail...

i like vi, i have gvim on all my computers, i still haven't found anything better (okay maybe sed) for doing large repetative changes to text files.
but i have never actually used emac, maybe it is better :)

For any sort of bulk work, sed is the tool of the Gods. Although if it involves more than one line of context, emacs macros are easier than wrestling with the pattern and hold spaces.

I routinely make small changes to documents or source code with ed, mind you. Now there's old school.
