I've just finished my dissertation (hurray!)
But there is a horizontal black line (few inches long) that has appeared at the end of the document which I cannot get rid of (boo!).

I can't delete it, I can't even highlight it, I don't know how it got there. I have even tried copying and pasting the essay on to a new word document but the line comes along too even though it's not even highlighted!!

It's like one of those annoying frustrating dreams.

Anyone know how to obliterate it?

It's going to be very difficult to solve this on a text forum without seeing the actual document.

I would agree with Mrsochesterscrat but I need to see the document itself.

cakedup · 29/05/2015 20:11

Dan is there any way I could send it to you for a look if you don't mind? I don't mind posting it up on here but I don't think there's a way I can do that is there?

cakedup Yes, I have PM'd you my email address.
Please send it to me there.

RedCrayons · 29/05/2015 20:17

You could screenshot the offending line and post as an image?

yehbutnobutyeh · 29/05/2015 20:24

It's not a page break is it?

DanFmDorking · 29/05/2015 20:40

Got it.

cakedup · 29/05/2015 20:41

Sorry, was dealing with DS but have just sent it to you DanFmDorking Flowers

OP posts:
DanFmDorking · 29/05/2015 21:08

I've emailed you the solution.
(It took me a while!)

cakedup · 29/05/2015 21:12

Blush
RedCrayons · 29/05/2015 21:20

I'm such a Word geek - tell me what the problem was?

DragonsCanHop · 29/05/2015 21:29

I would like to know as well Blush

I was thinking go to print and then set up and then remove comments...

cakedup · 29/05/2015 21:38

Well there was a sneaky little superscript (footnote number) on one of the pages (hadn't noticed it even though I'd gone through it umpteen times). So all I had to do was remove this little '1' and the bastard line disappeared!

Really touched how some people on here go out of their way to help others.

DragonsCanHop · 29/05/2015 21:54

when you have spent ages trying to see the obvious it is lovely to know there are kind people who will help you out.

Glad you got it sorted and good luck.

Well done Dan Flowers

RedCrayons · 29/05/2015 21:59

It's always something simple!

Good work Dan!!

ladygracie · 29/05/2015 22:03

Excellent. That must have been so frustrating. Massive well done on finishing your dissertation! Flowers Star

DanFmDorking · 29/05/2015 22:29

Thank you for your kind words.

It was one of those technical problems that, after the initial suggestions, could only be solved by looking at the document itself.

DragonsCanHop · 29/05/2015 22:32

Still very kind of you to extend the help via email Flowers

IsItMeOr · 29/05/2015 22:40

Glad this got solved. I had a similar problem with that wretched footnote line with a report I had to publish for work. I wanted footnotes, but not the line. I did eventually figure out how to get it to disappear. And of course had forgotten by the time I had to publish the next report a year later. And have now forgotten again.

Sooooo frustrating.

cakedup · 29/05/2015 22:50

Oh no IsItMeOr that is annoying. You could write down the solution somewhere and then forget where you kept it

Thank you ladygracie - you can't imagine the relief.

OP posts:
IsItMeOr · 31/05/2015 18:41

caked it's probably not so bad, as at least now I know that there is a solution? If only I could remember it... Grin.
