dc2 tablet is dying and we want to replace it for his birthday.
At the moment, he has a Hudl but for the second time, the plug is giving up. It's getting near impossible to charge it (First time was under warranty so we got it exchanged).
The internet connexion is also quite poor.

What would you advise as the best tablet on offer atm that will withstand been used by little hands?

Best quality tablet is any iPad. Not necessarily the best priced one.

I heart my iPad

I habe an ipad I use for work and yes it is so much better.
It's not qute the same range of prices though. As all things Apple, it is on the high end price wise and I would prefer something much cheaper for the dcs.

Without wanting to pry too much - what age are the DCs? Only ask because there's a Windows 8 tablet, the HP Stream 8 - which (if they are coming up to their teens may be useful) comes with MS Office 365 and 1 TB of cloud storage (for music, and perhaps school work, etc!)

You can also upgrade (cheaply) from Office 365 Personal to Office 365 Home which is a 5 licence version. Microsoft is making Office apps free for use on smaller tablets, Windows mobiles, plus Android and iOS devices.

It's obviously to get some to upgrade to the 365 Home subscription, but it means there are some great offers and with a 365 subscription, there will be (hopefully!) smooth transition as new versions of applications are released.

A couple of items will only run on Windows (eg Access, their database).

Think you can find the Stream 8 for 160 (on HP site, but was out of stock, when I looked the other day) to 200 quid on Amazon.

PS it will be eligible for free upgrade to Windows 10 when that comes out (probably late Summer or in the Autumn).

This dc will be 10yo.

In a year and a bit though he will go to secondary and will have to have an ipad for school (complusory item) . So this one is really a game purpose only and also the reason why I'm not keen on spending a lot of money to do it again in a year or so.

Having talked to parents with secondary kids, it's essential to buy the ipad through the school as it then gets an insurrance with it. A lot of ipads have been broken (screens mainly but also bent etc...) and if I buy him an ipad now, we won't get insurrance (the school doesn't provide insurrance for ipad you have bought yourself...). So unfortunatly, it's a question of finding one cheap tablet for now knowing we will get an expensive one in 18 months time Confused

Do a quick search on Amazon for B00GMI4I7A (Archos 70 tablet)

Should be about 60 quid (I am sure there will be some cheaper Chinese units, but Archos has a reasonable reputation)... the one on Amazon runs Android v4.2, so is much more up-to-date than my Archos 70 running Android 2.2.1.

The newer one has Google Play support (mine needed a workaround, as it was not an 'approved by Google' product when bought in 2011).

Oh thanks! I'll have a look :)
