Is there any reason not to buy a MacBook?

I dropped the hiusekoild laptop - a middle aged Sony Vaio and it's not really cost effective to get it repaired (it was £150 second hand 2 years ago), so we are looking to replace it.

We are already a very Appley household. DH and I both have iPhones, he has an iPad, we both have iPods and we have an Apple TV box.

Is there any reason not to replace the laptop with a Macbook? Or am I just being swayed by its prettiness? I recently came into £1000 which I wasn't expecting at all, so although price is an issue, I'd rather spend it on something a bit £££ once, than less £ several times.

If you can afford one and the software\ecosystem works for you then I'd go for it - great bits of kit with decent battery life

if it's a macbook air, I'd say no* if it's a Macbook pro is say yes.

*although both decent devices, the air has a relatively poor screen for the price range. they haven't upgraded it to "Retina", whereas windows laptops in that price range have. that being said, apple have an event next week where they will give more information about the Apple Watch and people think they may release an updated Air with Retina screen.

this has been said many times in the past at their product events and never materialised, but if anything if you want an air, wait till after the event to see what they announce

Ah, interesting Bee. It is an Air I was looking at.

I had one for xmas off dh, no problems so far, but dh has called about his a few times over past few years. The problem is sorted easy over the phone.
They are brilliant and no way would I go back to windows, microsoft can stick it. Grin

I'd agree with Macbook Pro, I have gone through 3 cheap laptops while dh's Macbook Pro has just kept on keeping on.

I think it depends on personal preference, and on how you use your laptop.

If you use a lot of windows programs, for example, you might find adapting to the Apple OS version somewhat disconcerting. This happened to a couple of friends of mine. They both went back to PCs. However, they aren't graphic designers - the graphic designers I know seem to love Macs Wink

In your position I would see if you can try one out before you invest. You might love it!

PS - the Mac dissenters also love their iPhones, iPads etc, so maybe that's not the best indicator of whether a Mac would suit you!

I've just gone from a vaio to a MacBook air and I love it. It has taken a bit of getting used to but it's worth the effort. It integrates with my iPhone and iPad seamlessly and I wouldn't go back.
I debated about the price a bit, but I got £100 off it on bonkers Friday before Christmas so I took the plunge. I guess it depends what you use it for, but the lack of a retina screen really isn't an issue for me. And the lightness makes it so easy to transport. It's almost worth it just for the speed it turns on. I was having to switch the vaio on and go and do something else while it heaved itself into action.

Same here. MacBook Air and the screen is fine, I don't watch tv etc though I just use it for work mainly.

Without a doubt my best ever purchase has been my MacBook Pro! We're very much an Apple household which is partly why I love it so much - especially the ease of photo storing (I take A LOT of photos!) from both my own and OH's iPhones and iPads using iPhoto on the Mac! Can't see us ever going back to Windows now
