New laptop for DH how much would I need to spend?

dH has a six year old enormous Acer laptop. We have talked about replacing it and I am wondering how much you would need to spend to get something decent?
He needs MS office and would use it mainly for work but also occasional films and for storing photos etc.
Any ideas on best buys as a guide would be fab if anyone has the inclination or has recently purchased one themselves.

DH bought me an Acer laptop to replace my 10 year old one. He then bought himself the same as we both really liked it. It's Windows 8 which takes a bit of getting used to but I downloaded a Windows 7 shell (just googled it) so it looks more like my old one and I can find my way round it.
