Apparently the 2014 release has soldered in memory, so upgrades "on the cheap" by a user are very much more difficult. Pricing from Apple for extra RAM is double the market price, so another case of 100% profit margin...

See article where this was found.

(I'm not in the business of upgrading Apple kit, but found this smacked of 1980, when the Commodore PET *> see photo

Gordon Bennett! This really is the last straw. Just about everything Apple have done for the last few years has been entirely to do with making their own gear obsolete sooner than it needs to be, and locking people into their overpriced version of the world more and more. It's rather like what we slagged off Microsoft for in the early 90s, except far worse. I am disgusted, after evangelising the Mac for years, to see them end up focussed mostly on ripping people off.

The article goes into how awkward things get if you try to upgrade the hard drive yourself, too. I know the kit generally works well (with the odd disaster, like Apple's maps on the iPhone, with rubbish info online), but when they charge ridiculous rates (often double the market price for memory), it does look more like a deliberate way to ripoff users.

Sure, there's some hype about Apple kit (though you wouldn't find me in a queue to be first through a shop door for anything and especially not through the doors of an Apple Store!) but I'd have thought that to get market share they could afford to drop prices somewhat, not carry on with 100++% markups.

Yikes. I wonder how long it will be before the iMac goes the same way?

Bloody Apple, don't they make enough money. Sad I'm still fuming that the iOS8 updates have seriously buggered up my iPad2. They have ruined it. I've tried a clean install etc but it won't come right.
