How do I save camera roll to icloud?

dottygamekeeper · 20/10/2014 21:39

I have bought extra space in the iCloud to store all my photos, but when I check settings to see what is being backed up to the cloud, in Photos it just shows my photo stream - but this is different to camera roll isn't it? As far as I understand it , My Photo Stream only stores up to 1,000 photos for 30 days in the cloud, so I can access them on other devices. How do I get all my photos (more than 1000) in camera roll into iCloud and do they stay there permanently? Can I then delete them off my phone to free up space, but still get at them from the cloud?

Is there anyone who can explain all of this really simply....

Watching because I want to know exactly the same thing! Sorry I can't help OP!

In a word...no Grin

I researched this recently and discovered that icloud backs up your phone/iPad as it is when you start the backup - so only what's on there at the moment.

A better solution is Dropbox but unfortunately mine is full Sad

You can move you photo stream photos to other albums to free up photo stream if that's what you mean?

LemonEmmaP · 20/10/2014 22:26

You can create a shared album with the last 1000 photos (or whatever photos you want - holiday or something). Once that's created then you can delete the photos from camera roll, and then repeat until you've cleared enough space. Apparently. This is what we were told by Apple at one of their Genius Bar appointments. To be honest I've never dared try...if you do, please make sure you have another backup...I'd hate to be wrong!

www.apple.com/icloud/photos/

iCloud photo libary:
Every photo and video you take now lives in iCloud — giving you the freedom to access your library from any device, anytime you want. So you can view a photo from last week or last year no matter where you are.

Have enabled it myself in photo settings and so far it's working well, also gives the option to store lower quality copies on your device to free up space while keeping the full quality versions online

cocacola1 · 21/10/2014 15:45

Better description:

iCloud Photo Library automatically keeps all your photos in the cloud, so you can access or download them on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and the web. And when you edit a picture using Photos in iOS 8, your changes are immediately uploaded to iCloud and visible on other devices. Just go to iCloud settings, Photos, and tap to enable.

TheColdDoesBotherMeAnyway · 21/10/2014 21:31

Where on the web though Confused because I can't find them anywhere other than my phone and iPad? And how do I do that low quality thing to release space?

cocacola1 · 21/10/2014 21:44

Did you enable icloud photo libary? Web access is via www.icloud.com

Attached image shows the space saving options

TheColdDoesBotherMeAnyway · 21/10/2014 21:48

That doesn't give me access to my photos though. Do I need a Mac and iPhoto? That's the impression I've got when I've looked into it before

cocacola1 · 21/10/2014 21:52

Once iCloud photo libary is on, all your photos will be available on all your apple devices and on Mac and windows via a web interface from the website linked above, this is a new feature that isn't enabled by default yet and if you choose to has to be manually switched on

TheColdDoesBotherMeAnyway · 21/10/2014 21:54

I don't have those options on my phone in iCloud settings

cocacola1 · 21/10/2014 21:56

Which version of iOS are you using?

TheColdDoesBotherMeAnyway · 21/10/2014 21:57

8

cocacola1 · 21/10/2014 22:01

You need to be on 8.1, update your phone and it will be there

purpleprincess · 21/10/2014 22:06

I need to update to 8.1 to try and set this up but when I go to my settings it tells me is cannot be installed as I haven't got enough storage grrr. Trying to move photos so I have more storage.

Any ideas?

Thanks

purpleprincess · 21/10/2014 22:08

I need to delete loads of emails but not sure how to go about that either I mean I know how to delete individually but that would take ages....

TheColdDoesBotherMeAnyway · 21/10/2014 22:08

Plug your phone into iTunes - takes ages but you don't need to clear space

TheColdDoesBotherMeAnyway · 21/10/2014 22:11

Thanks Smile

I'll do it tomorrow, it's too late to sit and stare at the laptop for the next hour whilst it does its thing now

purpleprincess · 21/10/2014 22:11

Ok thanks TDCBM will try that....still not sure find this cloud and storage stuff does my head in! Confused

cocacola1 · 21/10/2014 22:25

Your welcome thecold hope you get it all sorted!

purpleprincess · 22/10/2014 20:03

Remind me never to bother trying updating anything with my iPhone as it really stresses me out and has now told me that the update didn't work and I need to restore my phone to factory settings! Angry grrrr

TheColdDoesBotherMeAnyway · 22/10/2014 20:14

Ok...so I've updated. And compressed my photos so now I have over 3 GB of space - I had 200MB this morning so thank you Thanks

But how do I access iCloud online? I can see my photos on my phone and iPad but I thought I could also do it on the web?

cocacola1 · 28/10/2014 19:19

Sorry the cold, don't know if your still watching this, glad you manged to get some space back, it's just iCloud.com in any desktop web browser, signing in with your Apple ID and password to access them online

Cindy34 · 29/10/2014 05:51

Can I ask how you enable iCloud Photo Library on a Mac running Yosemite. Following upgrade, lost access to photos in iCloud. IPhoto shows thumbnails but says it can't find the images.
Does every device using the appleID need to be running latest OS?
