how to make phone calls using a pc - in this instance to a virgin mobile

i want to check the voicemail on my defunct mobile. are there are any programs that i can download (free ideally) to phone it. i've got only a very old mobile and a not very new pc either and a set of earphones.

i found this when i googled:

but i guess a mumsnetter may have actually tried doing something like this for real and know best...

why don't you phone it with a phone?

i have no other phone

i guess it could be useful to know how to do this anyway
