We are getting a new laptop. We already have an iPad that we use for leisure.
We are thinking of getting the 356 package that we'll subscribe to for£60 pa. We get updates and cloud storage but can we use the programmes off line?
We tried to get a response from the Microsoft online expert but we can't get a simple 'yes' or 'no' answer.
We understand that we have to be online to get updates but can we use the software without connecting to the net?

Yes, Office 365 can be used offline. You'll need to connect it to the internet once every thirty days, though.
