My laptop has been possessed!

I seem to lose control of the mouse and the puter types loads of zs and smileys into the address bar and flits between different dialogue boxes very fast! The only way to wrest control of the thing is the off button!

I have run AVG and malwarebyes and they haven't found anything, I also tried a system restore but that took forever and then failed.

I seem to able to use the thing right now, but fear it may be taken over again at any moment.

Can anyone help?

Sorry you got this trouble. What a pain! Just wondering how old your poor ailing laptop is. Someone once told me that the way to fix various troubles was to take the battery out and then replace it. Haven't a clue if this is correct and you could risk losing files etc. so sorry not much help but really wanted to sympathise. Have you googled trouble? Occasionally something comes up.

No taking battery out won't help this instance. That's just a way to force it to turn off and on.

OP go into your add and remove programs (may be called change and uninstall) and look down there to see if there is anything you don't recognise in there, especially something to do with smileys or anything called system protect/system update that you didn't put on there yourself.

That sounds useful. Must remember that.

I managed to run avg in safe mode and it found a fuck-ton of viri and although it didn't actually say it had blitzed them, it does seem better, I also cleared out the old cache so fingers crossed it is ok now.

Just another ideas from a novice in this area. When my lap top started to slow up and drive me mad I found "disc clean" by typing it in the programme box. I have windows 7. It only took a few minutes and removed masses of unwanted debris and my lap top returned to its previous lively state. Probably nothing to do with your problem and you probably do this regularly. As I haven't said, I don't know much but I am trying to learn. I just love my I Pad!

Are you using the free or paid for version of avg?
As previous pp suggested have a look in program's to see of there is stuff you don't recognise and remove it. Until you remove the infected program you will continue to have problems.

Useful to have, even more so if you are using IE.

Using free version, ran defender last night it took 4 hours and found nothing but the problem has returned.

both google and dh (who is a programmer) are baffled.

Really sounds like a Trojan or worm, and I would run other companies scans. Many do online versions so no downloads. If you are going to google them get the address bars from somewhere else because the infection could replicate the site.. Or go to download.com.. Also avoid any .exe downloads

Also have a look at your toolbars to see what's been added. Any you don't use/recognise remove. Some you can do when looking at the toolbars, others you have to remove from add/remove.

Something is in there reproducing itself, perhaps. I too would try a free online scan (and free trial if necessary) of something like Kaspersky. It's a concern that AVG found malware but didn't clearly say what it had done with it.

Malwarebytes is usually very good at clearing up this stuff. Another couple you can try are Superantispyware, or Spybot Search and Destroy.

If all else fails, you could backup all your files and try a clean reinstall of your system. That's drastic, and can take a while, but there's only so much time you can devote to cleaning your machine!

OMG Why won't it die?

I have stripped everything off and reinstalled windows, I spent all evening fiddling with it so it's how I like it.

Then just now I switch it on and the stupid blue circles start appearing on the left hand side of the screen again arghhhh!

Is it possible it is an actual physical problem with your keyboard/trackpad?

I'm beginning to think it might be either the trackpad or the touch screen, stupid thing is only 8 months old.

I was going to suggest a problem with the keyboard too!

Alternatively, if it is a virus it sounds similar to one I had years ago. Nothing we did got rid of it, it just replicated itself and came back. Annoyingly I had to format the hard drive in the end :(

Well things got worse- the touch screen stopped working altogether several times and the problem started to appear even on start up.

It went back to the shop on fri and I have new one; fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

Now I can move on with my life
