best/cheapest antivirus for laptop

the virus protection that we bought with my sons laptop has expired. Can anyone recommend a good/cheap/free antivirus thingy that he can download??

Avast Free is another one worth a look

If you're running Windows, Microsoft Security Essentials is good.

Avg is the best I've had. Guessing it's still free. Give it a google

AVG made my pc lag. Avast Free is what I replaced it with and it's brilliant.
