My DH turns 30 for his next birthday so I'd like to get him a tablet computer. Only problem is I know nothing about them. Grin

So please share your recommendations here - but not for Apple products because he doesn't like them.

Thanks!

Two main questions to start with:

  1. What's your budget?
  2. What size screen are you after (7", 8.9", 10")?

In the 7 inch range you probably want to be going with the Nexus 7, there's not really anything else which compares for the price.

For larger screens you'll want to be considering the Samsung Galaxy Tab (or Note) range.

But all this is budget reliant of course!

We have a nexus 7, which I really highly recommend after 6 months use! It's been great.

Whatever you buy - do get a case as well, lots of cheap options online.

Nexus if Android.

Why not Apple? I was anti it before getting an iPad, now I use it a lot.

I have a lot of Apple products and like them - I also understand why many don't. I bought my children a Kindle Fire each for Christmas as a replacement for their battered Kindles. They are great devices at a good price and I was tempted to get one for myself, but IMHO they are only really of use for entertainment/reading. If you wanted to get him a dual purpose entertainment/work tool then a Nexus 7 isn't a bad choice, but maybe something like a Surface tablet would suit better, lots of brownie points with one of these!

Nexus 7/10. Def not a Kindle, they don't run "real" android, they run a forked version that ties you into only using Amazon products.

Another vote for the Nexus

Thanks so far.

Re budget: don't really have one! Plan to get the family involved like he did for my 30th gift. Saves on getting lots of tat things he doesn't want since his family is obsessed with giving him elephant-related items. Probably don't want to go much above £500, though. His birthday's not till January, so I guess that gives things time to get a bit cheaper (that's totally how it works, right?)

He doesn't like Apple products because you must run the proprietary software and there are limited places where they can be fixed. Not sure how much of an issue the first is with regards to tablets, but the second causes issues for my friends here who have Apple products (Edinburgh) as often they must go to Glasgow to get them fixed.

Oh, and screen size: flexible on that. He has a netbook at the moment.

I'd probably be looking a 10" tablet then, probably the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 or Nexus 10.
